Along my path I hear about books that people are reading, and often are recommended to me. Mr. O’Kelly’s book was recommended by a practice group leader at a retreat I facilitated. This book is about the time between Mr. O’Kelly’s diagnosis of glioblastoma and the end of his life. His determination to apply his business principles to his dying process is a compelling read. We discover as he does, the power of values and personal conviction. One quote from the book: “Commitment is about depth. It’s about effort. It’s about passion. It’s about wanting to be in a certain place, and not somewhere else. Of course, time is involved; it would be naïve and illogical to suggest otherwise. But commitment is best measured not by the time one is willing to give up but, more accurately, by the energy one wants to put in, by how present one is.” As I often remind myself, presence is a gift worth giving. What presents are you giving today? This book will touch your mortality while reminding you to be present to your life. It is a fast read, albeit a somber one.
